VENICE

| September 2018

A city so intimately connected, Venetian locals greet each other via waterway as they pass by, close enough to touch. With such an intoxicating vibe, Venice was a destination my mom and I had to add to our mother-daughter trip to Europe. And its charm sucked us right in.

We stayed in the heart of the city in a bijou apartment, snug against the canal. We fell asleep and arose each day to the saccharine tunes of passing gondoliers and the wafting scent of sugared pastries just below our window.

This trip also just so happened to line up with my mom and my dad’s 30th wedding anniversary, so when the date rolled around I surprised her with a gondola tour through the city, complete with a serenade by her very own gondolier. This was something she had mentioned many times as having dreamed of experiencing, and since my dad is not much of a traveler, I knew it was up to me not to disappoint! It may seem funny that instead of my father it was me she shared the ride with, but Venice is not just a city for romantic lovers, but for love of all kinds, and the mother-daughter is one of the fiercest. We laughed and sang along with the gondolier as we floated down some of the most beautiful canals of the city.

Along with dining on some of the finest Italian dishes, we spent most of our time venturing around the city exploring every café, book store, and boutique stitched together along the canals. We must have gone up and down every side street at least twice and ended up racking over 10 miles a day by foot! Needless to say we went by a lot of gelato shops, and refused very few.

Italian men have a reputation that precedes them, for being overtly amorous and forward in their romantic endeavors. And I found this to be true, in my singular and personal experience at least.

Living in a city that alluring, with its cast iron bridges and budding vines wrapped around every corner, it is not hard to imagine why the atmosphere is saturated with romance. I must’ve been called “baby” by at least a handful of men each day, and even a few times at dinner would the waiter or a stranger passing by actually invite himself to sit down at the table and start flirting and try to pick me up right in front of my mother! One man even had the audacity to ask if she didn’t mind leaving after she finished eating so that he could take me for dessert and drinks to finish the date elsewhere. He, just like the others, regrettably had his advances turned down.

However persistent and annoying the gestures were, they were thankfully playful and harmless on the whole. So despite the nuisance of the excessive flirting, nothing could’ve taken away the beauty of the city that I got to share with my mother.

One reason in particular we were drawn to the city was to see the Renaissance and Gothic architecture that Venice is notably recognized for. We traced the palace-like structures all throughout the city up and down the winding canals, stopping to admire every one we could. We ended up eating pizza one afternoon on the steps in the photo below just admiring the craftsmanship and artistry surrounding us.

This was part of the Palazzo Ducale, or the Doge’s Palace, the supreme authority of the former Venetian Republic, located within the famous Piazza San Marco. The detail was so delicate and stunning we practically felt like royalty ourselves overlooking the castle-esque structure. We took turns leaning out the window, pretending we were calling out to a forlorn prince below!

This was taken when we were on our way back to the center of town, Rialto, when we went over the wrong bridge and landed ourselves a solid extra thirty minute walk away from our destination. I loved the rustic look of the old cast iron rail and just had to capture it.

Venice was a definition whirlwind trip, full of misadventure and living on a whim. We spent most of our time hustling through the busy city, missing ferries, getting off at wrong stops, going down the same street three times because we swore that was the street our Airbnb was on and having to ask a stranger to use google maps because my phone died and I forgot my external charger.. But it couldn’t have been a more perfect trip (minus the catcalls). We lived for the moment and went wherever the city decided to take us. Sometimes the only way to experience a city is to get lost, and only then will you find its true heartbeat.
